(napa cabbage or a round head of cabbage will work fine. you just need large leaves that can be rolled into little burrito shapes.)
makes: 6-8 rolls with 1 tbsp of filling each
filling
- 1/2 lb protein of choice
- 1/2 cup diced carrots
- 1/2 cup diced broccoli
- 1/2 cup diced onions
seasoning for meat
- 1 tsp oyster sauce
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1/2 tsp sesame oil
instructions
- combine the protein, veggies, and spices in a bowl! literally mash it all together
- place cabbage leaf in boiling water until bendable (took around 2 minutes per leaf if the water was really boiling)
- place 1 tbsp of filling on the leaf and roll it up! (you can use more if you'd like!)
- steam in rice cooker for 20 minutes (i just used the "white rice" setting and steamed it with a serving of rice but whatever works!)
note: i really eyeballed all of these so adjust measurements to your taste. for a sauce, i just added a little hoisin sauce and chili oil!
okay! i made these last night and they were so amazing i made them today for lunch as well. i originally was planning to make the polish version of this dish with meat and rice in the cabbage and baking them in tomato soup / sauce but i was really craving something with soy sauce and i HAD to use this cabbage soon.
you can use any meat and veggie as the filling, i think the biggest part is you just want to boil the leaves before, put a SMALL AMOUNT of filling, and steam them. regardless of what's inside, that will work. the filling cooked inside the roll for me since i used ground sausage. but if you use chicken or steak maybe you should cook it slightly outside the roll or really chop it up. i think using a ground protein or something you can mash up like beans and rice would work best!
i also made a shorthand recipe card for this! my goal is to create my own studio survival cookbook for the budgeting baddies trying to make good food without selling plasma every week.
and napa cabbage really isn't that expensive so i'm kind of excited for when the sausage is on sale again. i still have cabbage in my fridge that i need to eat as well! maybe i'll use it tonight with my leftover egg drop soup? okay yeah, i'm definitely going to do that haha. be prepared for that recipe next!
this cookbook is something i don't want to lose progress on! i want to make a ton of these recipe cards and then go get an actual notebook to put them in!! and then i'll always have good recipes at my disposal and i can pass them on to a child someday idk
recipe card

until next time,
